Prepositions Before Job Titles

"Tyler Cowen is professor of economics at George Mason University and general director of the Mercatus Center, and blogs at www.marginalrevolution.com."

So says Tyler's byline in his recent obituary for Octavia Butler.

My quibble: is Tyler "professor of economics" or "a professor of economics"? Say it aloud and judge for yourself.

Postscript (4/8/06): Yesterday's NYT gets it right:

Austan Goolsbee is a professor of economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
