allude. refer

A front-page article in tomorrow's Times incorrectly uses the word "allude":

“So how do you motivate the Maliki government? Well, one of the ways is go sit down and have dinner with him like Lindsey Graham and I did last week,” he [John McCain] said, alluding to his Republican colleague from South Carolina.

"Allude" means "to refer indirectly," but since McCain referred to Graham by name, it was not indirect, but direct. "Refer" would have sufficed.
