publish. write

In an op-ed in this past Sunday's LAT, David Greenberg writes (my emphasis):

The Republican pundit William J. Bennett published a book that year titled The Death of Outrage, suggesting that the public's capacity for empathy in cases like Clinton's had risen to dangerous levels, requiring a reversion to earlier, less sophisticated codes of conduct.

It seems to me that the only way Bennett published this book is if he self-published it, which he did not. Write and publish are not interchangeable.

Addendum (4/27): Another high-profile misuse, from the first sentence of an article in today's Post:

An active-duty Army officer is publishing a blistering attack on U.S. generals, saying they have botched the war in Iraq and misled Congress about the situation there. . . .

The article, "General Failure," is to be published today in Armed Forces Journal and is posted at http://www.armedforcesjournal.com.
