Is it spelled "Mideast" or "Mid-east"?

In 2002, I asked Merriam-Webster the following question. Emily Vezina replied as follows.

Q: Is it spelled "Mideast" or "Mid-east"?

A: While both “Mid East” and “Mid-East” are used, by far the most common way of writing this is “Mideast.”
